ANIMATION FOR A DOCUMENTARY FILM ABOUT CHILDREN FROM ORPHANAGES

The Anna Pomogaet Foundation has been supporting the social integration of orphanage graduates for many years. A few years ago, a group of filmmakers led by director Anton Kolbin began working on a documentary about some

of these graduates.

Our studio team created the animated sequences for the film.

Unfortunately, while “You Know, It Happens” is on the festival circuit, it is not yet available for viewing, but you can watch the animated excerpts from the film.

The film tells several stories of children who ended up in orphanages at different ages. Now they have grown up, found jobs, and are trying to cope with their past and live a dignified life.

Some of them even help others. These are the stories of very different people, each brought to the orphanage by a very different story.

We created nearly twenty minutes of animation in a few months. First, we spent a long time developing the concept, discussing

with the director how we wanted it to look. It wasn’t supposed to be overly complex or intrusive. The animation had to tell the story clearly while remaining self-sufficient.

According to the first viewers’ feedback, we achieved our goal. The animation resonated emotionally and illustrated the stories of the young people exceptionally well.

As we had anticipated, and had always known, animation is a powerful way to convey what cannot be expressed through dialogue, portraits, or footage. Some meanings can only be understood through animation.

Moreover, animation works especially well where archival footage cannot be shown, where a character shares memories of things that no longer exist. This way, we helped tell the story clearly, complete the picture, and let the audience immerse themselves more deeply in the story.
